Jim Willis Insurance – Medicare Advantage Plans

Medicare Advantage Plans — also known as Medicare Part C — are health plan options offered through the Medicare program. By enrolling in one of these plans, you’ll receive your Medicare-covered health care directly through the Medicare Advantage Plan, which may also include prescription drug coverage.

Types of Medicare Advantage Plans include:

  • Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs)

  • Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs)

  • Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) Plans

  • Medicare Special Needs Plans (SNPs)

When you join a Medicare Advantage Plan, you’ll receive a health insurance card from your plan to use for all your covered health care services. Many plans also provide extra benefits and lower co-payments compared to Original Medicare. Most are managed care plans (HMOs or PPOs), which may require you to see network doctors or use certain hospitals to receive care.

Eligibility & Costs
To enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan, you must have both Medicare Part A and Part B. You’ll continue paying your monthly Part B premium to Medicare, plus any premium charged by your Medicare Advantage Plan for additional benefits.

  • In 2025, the standard Part B premium is $185.00 per month (higher for some based on income).

  • Individuals receiving Social Security benefits may pay a reduced amount.

Enrollment Periods
Medicare has specific timeframes for joining, switching, or dropping a Medicare Advantage Plan:

  • Initial Enrollment Period: Begins 3 months before the month you turn 65 and ends 3 months after.

    • Example: If your 65th birthday is May 5, you may enroll anytime from February 1 through August 31.

  • Disability Enrollment: If you receive Social Security Disability Insurance, you may enroll from 3 months before to 3 months after your 25th month of disability.

  • Annual Enrollment Period: Each year from October 15 to December 7, you may join, switch, or drop a Medicare Advantage Plan.
